Transforming Futures: Liverpool's RISE Up Programme Boosts Student Wellbeing by 39%

Updated: Aug 20

We hope you are enjoying a well-deserved break this summer!

While you recharge and prepare for the upcoming school year, our team has been diligently reviewing the progress and impact of our initiatives across Liverpool and Norfolk. It’s with great excitement that we share some uplifting updates from Phase 2 of the Liverpool RISE Up programme.

The RISE Up programme, in partnership with 10 brilliant schools, Liverpool School Sports Partnership and with the generous support of Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust, is pioneering efforts to enhance the mental wellbeing and life chances of young people in Liverpool.

A Journey of Transformation and Innovation

Since its inception in early 2023, the Liverpool RISE Up programme has embarked on a transformative journey.

Beginning with three secondary schools, the initiative has swiftly expanded its horizons to encompass a vibrant mosaic of educational institutions, from primary schools to special schools.

This expansion has been driven by an unwavering commitment to enhancing the mental wellbeing and life prospects of our young learners.

Analysis of Phase 1 and Phase 2 schools revealed:

  • A 39% Improvement in Student Mental Wellbeing: Leveraging an adapted version of the renowned Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, the programme has documented a staggering uplift in teachers perceptions of the mental health of participating students.

  • A 34% Enhancement in School Wellbeing Provisions: Across the board, the schools involved in the RISE Up programme have revolutionised their approach to student welfare. Using the comprehensive School Wellbeing Scorecard, they’ve drastically improved the support structures available to students.

These achievements highlight the effectiveness of trauma-informed physical education combined with early intervention mental wellbeing programmes.

This approach not only changes how we think about physical activity but also incorporates emotional and psychological support into everyday school life.

Our focus on improving students' mental wellbeing through innovative methods, such as upskilling our dedicated teachers, has proven to be beneficial. The results are clear and lasting, showing that our collective efforts are making a real difference.

We currently have 5 more fantastic secondary schools taking part in Phase 3 of the Liverpool RISE Up programme thanks to funding by Liverpool Virtual School.

Looking ahead, we are enthusiastic about the possibilities of expanding this programme even further.

The Liverpool RISE Up programme demonstrates the potential for significant outcomes when we integrate thoughtful planning with compassionate educational practices and the professional development of our fantastic educators.
